Data mining

Data mining is a step within the Knowledge Discovery in Databases (KDD) process through which an organisation's data assets are processed and to gain insights to assist decision-making. KDD originates with data held in the organisation's data management systems or data warehouses. The steps to knowledge discovery include data selection, processing, transformation, data mining, interpretation and evaluation leading to discovery of new intelligence or knowledge. In an institution, the internal data assets and those obtained from external sources and warehoused are processed and analysed in depth to gain insights on the research object, event or situation
