TASK
In today's rapidly evolving digital environment, organisations increasingly rely on effective project management and planning practices to deliver complex Information Systems (IS) projects. While traditional project management approaches provide structured planning, control, and predictability, Agile methodologies offer flexibility, adaptability, and continuous stakeholder engagement. As a result, many organisations are transitioning towards hybrid project management approaches that integrate both methodologies to improve project success.
However, selecting and applying an appropriate project management approach is not always straightforward. Projects vary in terms of complexity, uncertainty, stakeholder requirements, and technological change. Therefore, it is essential for project managers to critically evaluate different methodologies and determine how they can be effectively applied, adapted, or combined in real-world scenarios involving management information systems.
In this assessment, you are required to act as a project management consultant and conduct an in-depth analysis of a real-world Information Technology (IT) project (either successful or unsuccessful). The purpose of this assignment is to evaluate the project management methodology used, critically assess its effectiveness, and propose improvements based on Agile, Traditional, or Hybrid approaches.
Through this task, you will strengthen your research, analytical thinking, and professional report-writing skills, while learning to integrate academic literature with practical case study insights from areas such as software engineering.
Task Description
In this assessment, you will analyse a real-world Information Technology (IT) project (either successful or unsuccessful) from the perspective of a project management consultant. Your focus is to examine the project management methodology applied, evaluate its effectiveness, and explore how it could be improved using Agile, Traditional, or Hybrid approaches.
To achieve this, you must conduct a literature review by identifying and analysing at least ten (10) peer-reviewed academic sources relevant to project management methodologies. You are expected to integrate theoretical knowledge with practical insights from your selected case study. Your analysis should go beyond description and demonstrate critical thinking, evaluation, and justification of your arguments.
Furthermore, you are required to compare Agile and Traditional methodologies, examine their strengths and limitations, and explore how hybrid approaches can be effectively implemented. You should also identify potential challenges or conflicts that may arise when combining these methodologies and propose realistic strategies to address them.
This assignment contributes 40% of the total unit grade, reflecting its importance in developing your analytical, research, and professional writing skills. Students are strongly encouraged to begin early, engage with academic literature throughout the trimester, and progressively refine their work to produce a high-quality submission related to application programming and software practices.
Additional Requirements
The report must be written in a clear and professional academic style
The final submission must be no fewer than 2,500 words
The report should demonstrate logical flow and coherence between sections
Critical analysis and justification are required throughout the report
Diagrams or tables may be included where appropriate to support your analysis
