Challenges associated with diversity in teams, HR Management

Assignment Help:

To counter the challenges associated with diversity in teams, Leonard - Barton (1995) uses the term creative abrasion to describe the process of involving a variety of people with diverse skills and, as 'different ideas rub against each other, sparks fly'. In this situation divergent views are actively encouraged, concerns and ideas are openly expressed, the group is aware of its limitations and threats, each member's uniqueness is recognised and collective doubts are discussed. Neck and Manz (1994) argue that these processes are constructive in nature, lead to higher-quality decision making, and are deeply rooted in the collective thought patterns of the group. In a similar vein, Calvard et al. (2010) found that if members engage in what they call 'perspective taking' - the collective effort expended by team members to imagine constructively and attend to the differing points of view available - then cooperation is enhanced as team members avoid social categorisation, tailor their communication to diverse audiences and focus on the job at hand instead of looking for people to blame.
