Reflective Essay
Purpose
The purpose of this assessment is to assess student capacity to demonstrate their theoretical knowledge and practical application of important aspects of Organisational Behaviour.
Assessment Overview
The objective of this assessment is to introduce students to key theories, concepts, and research in Organisational Behaviour (OB) and help, without the use of AI, to develop foundational academic writing, research, and critical thinking skills.
Students need to identify an incident that they have personally experienced and then analyse this incident to an aspect of the course, e.g., leadership, personality, motivation, organisational politics, organisational culture, change etc. and then reflect on how this topic helps a manager to manage or a leader to lead.
Before beginning this task, students must research and understand the characteristics of reflective essays so that the submitted piece is indeed reflective, rather than a summary of the chosen topic or a reportage of what was found.
Such submissions will not achieve a pass grade.
In addition to discussion and reflection about how the chosen topic helps managers and leaders, students must reflect on how the chosen topic has relevance to their own, current functioning circumstances as a student.
For example, reflect and write about HOW motivation applies to your own circumstances and WHY an understanding of this topic is important to you as well as to managers and leaders.
The analysis and reflection about the chosen topic is to be presented in a structured reflective essay.
In the Reflective Essay, Students Need To:
Identify an incident that they have personally experienced.
Reflect on the incident and analyse it by applying relevant OB concepts and theories.
Relate and critically analyse peer-reviewed academic literature about their chosen topic.
Discuss practical implications arising from the topic for organisations and themselves.
Make suggestions and recommendations for future behaviours and/or approaches based on the analysis of the incident.
Reference correctly using APA 7th style.
Assessment Criteria
1. Content:
Clear identification and explanation of a personally experienced incident; appropriate selection and understanding of a relevant OB topic; sufficient contextual information; relevant discussion of implications for managers, leaders, organisations, and the student.
2. Analysis:
Effective application of relevant OB concepts and theories to the incident; explanation of why and how the incident occurred, rather than description; critical analysis and evaluation of peer-reviewed academic literature; appropriate use and evaluation of information; reliance on academic literature.
3. Academic Argument:
Meaningful reflection on the student's own experience and learning; integration of personal reflection with OB theory and academic research; consideration of how the topic applies to the student's current circumstances; development of logical situations and recommendations for future behaviours or approaches.
4. Presentation:
Individual ability, without the use of Artificial Intelligence, to present material adopting conventional academic writing conventions, including those relating to clarity, spelling, grammar, use of syntax and academic referencing; appropriate use of peer-reviewed sources; accurate APA 7 referencing and presentation.
