Note taking is a key skill and is a very important part of reading. It has two purposes:

¨ aiding understanding - by picking out the key points, summarising and restating the material in your own words, you are reflecting and conceptualising what you read and structuring your understanding in a way which is meaningful to you; and

¨ aiding retrieval - providing a means of referring to the information without recourse to the original source material.
