Contact-based keyboards employ switches directly. Though they have a comparatively shorter life they are the most preferred type these days because of their lower cost.  Three such types of keyboards have been used in PCs:  

Mechanical Switches: These keyboards use conventional switches with metal contacts directly touching each other. Springs and other parts are used to control positioning of keycaps and give the right feel. On the whole this design isn't suitable to PC keyboards.
