Question - Practice going to gemba to "go see, ask why, and show respect." Choose an area of your organization that either frustrates you or impacts your daily work in some way. For those of you that aren't currently working, consider observing in a waiting room for an hour. I'd be happy to help you think through opportunities for observation if needed. Ideally, you should shadow someone doing their work. The key here is to put aside your assumptions of what happens and just observe. Do not try to correct or interrupt. Show respect and seek to understand the reason and purpose for doing the work a certain way. The goal of this exercise is to get the 'ah-ha' moment (that piece of information that was hidden due to silos and a lack of transparency). These 'ah-ha' moments can be utilized to generate opportunities for improvement as well as build trust between individuals and departments.

After your observation, answer the following questions:

A) Where did you go and why?

B) What surprised you?

C) What did you find to be most difficult?

D) What will you do next as a result of what you've observed?
