Question
Sam is here today with his dad for a sports physical. Sam (he, him, his) is a 17-year-old boy who wants clearance to run cross country in the fall and play baseball in the spring on his high school teams. A junior, Sam would be on each team for the third year. You also saw Sam last year for his sports physical and provided clearance for all sports.
Last year during baseball season, he tore his right ACL. It was repaired approximately four months ago, and he was recently released from the orthopedic surgeon. They have brought documentation from the surgeon for you.
Why is it important to conduct a pre-participation sports physical each year?
What recommendations do you give Sam to prevent injury?
While chatting about his baseball team's record, Sam casually asks, "So, like, should girls be able to join the guys' baseball team? I mean, back in elementary school, I played with some girls, and they were seriously good at it!" How do you respond?
Then, Sam tells you, "So, I'm all about scoring that college baseball scholarship! But I'm thinking I gotta beef up these muscles, you know? Any like, drugs or supplements or stuff that can help me up my game as an athlete?" How do you respond?
