Question: What does Yoshino mean by referencing the idea that the straight-white male does not have to cover and therefore aren't allowed the " full expression of their humanity" as it relates to assumptions in American Culture? How might this idea connect to hooks discussion of the dichotomy of Teaching with Objectivism vs. Teaching with Love?
Im having trouble explain my last quote i want to talk about how assumptions have like desensitized us in society and has cause negative effects ?
Case Study: Society prioritizes certain groups' rights based on generalization and assumptions. Minorities have classified "the straight white male" as those who don't have to deal with any hardships or obstacles since their lives are perfectly laid out for them to achieve in society, which is a false generalization that society makes. Every race and gender has a variety of challenges in their everyday lives. This assumption is causing many straight males from speaking and expressing themselves on many topics. Yoshino references "those straight white men -- do not also cover. They are understood only as obstacles, as people who prevent others from expressing themselves, rather than as individuals who are themselves struggling for self-definition"(7). In the fight for civil rights many people tend to forget other people then their own groups that they are advocating for. These assumptions have caused even the so-called majority in society to silence themselves because they feel like they wouldn't be heard or valued because they are held to a different standard than the rest of society. Bell hooks dives into the dichotomy between teaching with objectivism and teaching with love in her piece titled"Teaching with Objectivism vs. Teaching with Love." Hooks explains the common misconceptions that teachers and students hold in the classroom. Hooks states, "These students also assumed that they could say anything since gayness was "out there" and not "in here" with us.Their heterosexist thinking prevented them from even consid-ering that gay students might be taking this class.
