Write essay about "how can we reduce car pollution in big cities"
Introduction
Brief description of the topic - Thesis Statement
People choose to be a vegetarian for many reasons, including health issues, compassion for animals, and consideration for the environment (Mangels, 2008). Although environmental considerations are not their main reason for becoming vegetarian at first, many individuals become much more interested in the environment after becoming vegetarians. There are too much greenhouse gas emissions come from animal agriculture, and livestock production uses too much water.
More people should become vegetarians to help the environment because it reduces global warming and contributes to water conservation.
Discussion Point 1
To reduce global warming, more people should eat less meats because the production of livestock contribute a primary source of greenhouse gas.
• the production of livestock, including their transport and feed
• emit more greenhouse gases than all transportation worldwide combined
According to Richard (2010), "[i]n 2006, a United Nations report indicated that animal agriculture emits more greenhouse gases in CO2 equivalents than all the cars, planes, ships, and other means of transportation worldwide combined" (p. 5).
Discussion Point 2
More individuals should become vegetarians to save water because livestock production uses a lot of water.
• There are many ways that livestock production uses freshwater, such as cleaning and cooling facilities, drinking, and flushing waste.
• produce meat takes a lot of water
According to Yacoubou (2009), "[b]esides water for drinking and servicing animals (e.g., cleaning and cooling facilities, washing animals, and flushing waste), there are many other ways that livestock production uses water. The major ones include slaughtering, meat and milk processing, and leather tanning, all of which "result in high water usage" (p. 22).
Counter-point
On the other hand, some people may argue that crops need much irrigation water, and it also generates greenhouse gas emissions.
According to Wahlquist (2013), "[e]ating less meat could reduce the amount of methane we produce, but it could also increase the cropping land and irrigation water needed; and increase nitrous oxide and the use of energy for growing and processing" (p. 8).
Rebuttal (Clear rebuttal statement)
According to Brummer (2008), "[p]roducing animal protein takes up to 15 times more water compared to producing plant protein" (p. 32).
According to Panchal (2009), "[i]t takes 28 calories of fossil fuel to produce one calorie of protein in beef, while the calories of fossil fuel needed to produce one calorie of protein in soybeans is two" (p. 27).
Conclusion
In conclusion, livestock is a significant factor that causes the serious environmental problems global warming and water pollution.
"There is no question that the choice to become a vegetarian or lower meat consumption is one of the most positive lifestyle changes a person could make in terms of reducing one's personal impact on the environment, says Christopher Flavin of the Worldwatch Institute" (Doolittle, 2008, para. 8).
