Write a 3 to 4 page report that demonstrates your ability to understand deviance (typed, double-spaced, 12 pt font, 1in margins, MS Word document).

This requires "comprehending the world of the deviant as that individual experiences it, at the same time remaining sufficiently detached to analyze the interrelationships of the deviant world and the larger social order" (Clinard& Meier 2007: 49).

Your report should include quotations of the participant's responses

Do not include any personally identifying information in your reports

Your report should also include clear connections to concepts discussed in the Module Minute materials previous weeks in the course.

Reporters should have this dual perspective and address at least some of the following kinds of questions:

Does the respondent classify the behavior in question as "deviant"? Has the respondent been socialized into a "deviant role"? By what process did the respondent "become deviant"? Is the respondent part of a "deviant subculture"?

What social norm or set of social norms is at issue? What is the social history of the norm? How widely is it accepted? How is it enforced?
How does the respondent feel about the norm they is presumably violating? What does deviance mean to the respondent? Does the respondent feel social pressure to comply? Are they subject to formal or informal mechanisms of social control?
Does the deviant behavior affect other aspects of the respondent's life, for example, personal and family relationships, work, physical and/or emotional health, or other social relationships and roles? Is the deviant behavior part of a more general pattern of noncompliance with other social norms or does the respondent deviate from certain norms and comply with others?
