Question: Jerry arrived for his weekly appointment with his case worker, presenting as intoxicated. Despite completing alcohol detox and rehabilitation, Jerry relayed he had 'a few' drinks prior to his arrival. Jerry did not present in rapid withdrawal nor demonstrate the need for urgent medical attention. Jerry drank a glass of water & described his feelings of frustration leading to self medicating with alcohol, & expressed remorse for his behaviour. Jerry agreed to attend Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, return to detox, & made a GP appointment. Jerry apologised for his initial presentation & accepted referrals. You are now required to attend a debriefing session with your colleagues. You will discuss what happened, how it was handled, and how this type of situation could be handled better, or avoided, in the future. You share with your supervisor you felt you managed the incident well, did not feel the incident needed police involvement, and you feel supported by your workplace.
