Capstone Industry Project
Assessment: Project Definition and Scope
Learning Outcome 1: justify the selected approach to solve an IT problem.
Learning Outcome 2: to apply appropriate project management approaches to solve an IT problem.
Assessment Purpose
This assessment is designed to help students define an IT problem in a security and networking context, articulate the project scope, and build a compelling business case. It evaluates two key capabilities: the justification of a selected IT approach (ULO1), and the application of Project Management And Planning techniques (ULO2). Through analytical thinking, structured planning, and decision-making, students will integrate theoretical and practical skills in areas such as software development, Data Communication And Networking, and IT security.
The task supports learning through the study of topics such as Collecting Evidence (Weeks 2-3) and Preparing a Critical Review and Project Proposal (Weeks 4-5). Students will apply this knowledge to examine issues in current Management Information System Mis environments and network infrastructures, identify security and business-related problems, and propose viable solutions aligned with industry standards and technologies.
Assessment Instructions
You will complete this assessment individually, submitting a 1000-word report that defines and analyses the IT problem assigned to your project. You are expected to justify your recommended solution approach (ULO1) and apply relevant Project Management And Planning techniques (ULO2) to develop the project scope and development strategy.
Structure your report as follows:
Introduction
Background
Current Information System (IS) & Network Infrastructure
Components of the IS & Network Infrastructure
Current Business, Network, and Security Problems
Proposed System Functionality
SDLC & Network Development Methodology
Describe the proposed system functionality.
Recommend a suitable SDLC methodology and justify your choice.
Business Case
Identify strengths and weaknesses in the current IS.
Evaluate the current situation and assess the risks and advantages of implementing a new IS.
Development Strategy
Outline the total cost, timeline, and use of AI technologies where appropriate.
Apply project management principles to support your strategy.
Attendance Requirement: Students must attend classes in person to be eligible to receive marks for this assessment. As this is a project-based unit, students are required to demonstrate their weekly project progress to their supervisor during class. In addition, after submitting the assessment, students must attend the post-submission class discussion about their work. If a student does not attend this post-submission class, the submitted assessment will not be marked.
