IS Project Management
Purpose
Project management reports are essential tools used by organisations to plan, execute, and evaluate complex projects. This group assessment is designed to support the development of project management and planning skills through the application of both Traditional and Agile methodologies in a collaborative context.
Through this task, you will develop your ability to critically evaluate project requirements, make informed assumptions, and produce a comprehensive project management plan supported by appropriate documentation.
Task Instructions
Working in groups of 3-4 students, identify your assignment topic from the Group Assignment Topics file (available under Resources) and develop a comprehensive project management plan that integrates both Traditional and Agile approaches.
There are additional templates available in the Resources section below to support you in completing each section.
Please ensure that you follow all instructions carefully when completing the assignment.
As part of this task, your group is expected to:
• Critically evaluate the project requirements and develop a comprehensive project management plan that integrates both Traditional and Agile approaches.
• Make reasonable assumptions where necessary. You may adjust the project scope, budget, and schedule if required; however, any such parameters must be clearly stated in the Introduction section.
• Develop comprehensive project management plans and all relevant documentation in alignment with the selected project requirements.
• Incorporate Agile project management elements and provide a justified selection of project methodology (Traditional, Agile, or Hybrid).
Additional Information
To help you complete this task successfully, the following resources are provided:
• Marking Rubric - refer to this to understand how you will be assessed
• Cadmus Manual - refer to this for information about academic skills (click the book icon in the bottom right to access the manual)
• Checklist: Initial Research Proposal Report - use this to help you complete the task
• Group Assignment Topics - available under the Resources section below. Select your assignment topic from this list.
Checklist: Project Management Plan
Copy + paste this checklist into the Notes section in Cadmus and tick off items as you complete them.
Step 1: Task Understanding
Together with your group:
• Carefully read the assignment instructions and requirements
• Complete and accept your Group Charter within Cadmus to ensure roles and expectations are agreed upon early.
• Make a plan for group meetings. A template for Meeting Agenda & Minutes is available under the Resources section below. You will need to include meeting agenda minutes for at least two meetings with your final submission.
Step 2: Topic Selection and Assumptions
• Identify your assignment topic from the Group Assignment Topics file (available in the Resources section below).
• Discuss the project context as a group and establish any initial assumptions needed to begin planning. These may relate to the project context, stakeholders, or constraints where information is not explicitly provided.
N.B. At this stage, focus on defining a clear starting point for your project. As you progress through the development of your project help plans, you may find that your assumptions need to be refined or expanded. Any adjustments to project scope, budget, or schedule should emerge from this process and be clearly articulated and justified in the Introduction section of your final report.
Step 3: Project Integration Management
• Begin developing the foundational elements of your project. This includes:
o Task 1: Prepare a business case that justifies the project
o Task 2: Develop a project charter that formally defines the project objectives, stakeholders, and key deliverables.
• Templates to support you in Tasks 1 & 2 are available under the Resources section below. To use the templates, copy and paste them into Cadmus and then complete the details within Cadmus.
Step 4: Project Scope Management
• Task 3: Define the scope of your project by developing a scope management plan. Clearly outline what is included (and excluded) in the project.
• Task 4: Construct a Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) that decomposes the project into manageable tasks and components.
• Templates to support you in Tasks 3 & 4 are available under the Resources section below. To use the templates, copy and paste them into Cadmus and then complete the details within Cadmus.
Step 5: Project Schedule Management
• Task 5: Using your Work Breakdown Structure, create a Gantt chart that outlines the project timeline.
o Identify at least five key milestones and ensure that task sequencing and dependencies are clearly represented.
o A Gantt template is available under the Resources section. Copy and paste the template into Cadmus.
o If you choose to manage the Gantt in Excel, copy and paste your completed chart into the body of your report in Cadmus. Also upload your completed Excel file to Cadmus via the Files tab in the top left.
Step 6: Project Cost and Quality Management
• Task 6: Prepare a cost estimation for your project and provide a basic financial justification.
• Ensure that your estimates are realistic and aligned with the project scope and schedule.
• A Cost Estimate and a Business Case Financials template are available under the Resources section. Copy and paste the template into Cadmus.
• If you choose to manage the cost estimation and financials in Excel, copy and paste your completed chart (or a screenshot) into the body of your report in Cadmus. Also upload your completed Excel files to Cadmus via the Files tab in the top left.
Step 7: Project Resource Management
• Task 7: Create a Responsibility Assignment Matrix (RACI Chart) that clearly identifies roles and responsibilities for each task within the project. Ensure that accountability and ownership are clearly defined across the group.
• A RACI template is available under the Resources section. Copy and paste the template into Cadmus.
• If you choose to manage the RACI in Excel, copy and paste your completed chart (or a screenshot) into the body of your report in Cadmus. Also upload your completed Excel file to Cadmus via the Files tab in the top left.
Step 8: Project Risk Management
• Task 8: Identify potential risks associated with your project and document them in a risk register.
• Task 9: Assess each risk and plot them on a Probability/Impact Matrix to demonstrate their significance and potential impact on the project.
• Templates to support you in Tasks 8 & 9 are available under the Resources section below. To use the templates, copy and paste them into Cadmus and then complete the details within Cadmus.
Step 9: Agile and Hybrid Project Management
• Task 10: Develop at least five (5) user stories.
• Task 11: Create a prioritised product backlog
• Task 12: develop a basic sprint plan consisting of at least two sprints.
• Task 13: Compare Agile and Traditional project management approaches and provide a clear justification for your selected methodology (Agile, Traditional, or Hybrid).
Students working on information technology projects may also benefit from reviewing documentation and software development planning techniques relevant to hybrid project environments.
Step 10: Plan Report Structure
• Plan your final report using the required structure:
o Executive Summary: Provide an overview of the report's outcomes (no longer than half a page). See here for a guide on writing an Executive Summary.
