Assignment:
The play illustrates several sets of universal, timeless conflicts. (See introduction on first page of play for examples of conflicts.) Discuss three (3) sets of conflicts that are found in the play. For each conflict discussion, follow this outline:
• First, state the conflict. Remember to state it as "something vs. something else". (Do not use character names in your conflicts. They should be worded as universals, such as the one used below as an example.)
• Next, describe the nature of the conflict. (Again, see the example provided below.)
• Then, use a direct quotation from the play to illustrate the conflict. Introduce the quote by telling your reader who is speaking, and to whom they are speaking.
• Finally, after stating the quote, tell HOW the quote helps to illustrate the conflict.
(NOTE: Make sure that for each conflict quote from a passage of the play that includes language which relates to or illustrates the conflict. If the quote is irrelevant, you will lose points.)
The instructor is providing this model for what your paragraphs should look like. However, DO NOT use this example as one of your three conflicts. Choose three different ones to discuss.
Example: One universal conflict in the play is old age vs. youth. This timeless conflict exists when two people-one who is much younger than the other-do not see eye-to-eye on a particular issue. Generally, the older person will feel that their point of view of the correct one simply because they have lived longer and should, therefore, be viewed as wiser. This conflict is illustrated when Haimon tries to respectfully tell his father that all the townspeople disagree with the law, but Creon replies to his son, "Indeed you should listen and follow your father's judgment in all things." This quote illustrates the conflict because Creon thinks that his son should listen to him because he is the father. He clearly doesn't respect his son's.
