2. The title of Liu's piece consciously echoes that of James Baldwin's "Notes of a Native Son." What similarities and differences do you see in each writer's treatment of race in America? What is the importance of "Son" and "Speaker" for each?

3. Liu's reflections on his difficulties with his hair is one example of the ways in which he tried to fit in when he was younger. Think about a time when you tried to fit in - when did you stop? Have you? Explain your answers.
