There are several frameworks that analyze Evidence-Based Practice (EBP). One of the most widely utilized models is the Iowa Model of EBP. The Iowa Model consists of five-steps: identify a problem/ trigger, select an evidence-based intervention, pilot the intervention, determine the appropriateness of adopting the practice beyond the pilot, and scale up the EBP change to other units once positive results are observed (Chiwaula and Jere, 2022). I'm sure many of us can read these five steps and resonate with having completed something along these lines in our careers, at some point in time. Perhaps we were completing EBP projects using the Iowa model without even knowing it. For example, a project that comes to mind for me, personally, involves an expedited patient's hospital discharge process. I remember talking with some colleagues that work on a unit at a different campus from where I work, and they were explaining a new EBP project they were working on centered around expediting a patient's discharge time from the hospital. The goal of the project was for patient's to discharge earlier in the shift to make room for ED admissions and surgical patients on the floor earlier in the day. They piloted the project first on their unit, saw positive results, and implemented the process to other floors within the hospital system. To me, this resembles steps of the Iowa Model.
