The Internet, intranets, email and groupware make more data than ever before available to the knowledge worker. Customer / user comments, communications between staff members of an organisation and peers in a professional group, internal research reports, trade and technical publications, and competitor and other web sites are some examples of available heterogeneous electronic data. As a result the literature on KM, information retrieval, corporate portals, digital libraries and web-based information and document management technologies express concern about the information overloaded, web-centered digital world, and the need for better methods of knowledge organisation.
