Road Drainage and Maintenance:

The life of a road depends upon how well and quickly the water is drained away from its various components. Similarly, regular and periodic inspection and maintenance of a road ensures that the facility lasts over a period it is designed for.

Objectives

After studying this unit, you should be able to :

  • understand the importance of drainage of roads,
  • know surface and subsurface drainage is achieved through side drains, intercepting drains, the subsurface pipe drains and cross-drainage structures, and
  • discuss the road maintenance, how the maintenance needs are assessed and how the maintenance of various types of roads is achieved.
