Preparation of chlorine, Chemistry

Assignment Help:

Q. How to Prepare Chlorine in Laboratory?

Chlorine is prepared by oxidation of hydrochloric acid with potassium permanganate:

2KMnO4 + 16HCl -> 2KCl + 2MnCl2 + 8H2O + 5Cl2

The gas is bubbled through water to remove any unreacted hydrochloric acid and dried by bubbling through sulfuric acid. Being denser than air, it can be collected by downward delivery.
