How are roots affected by water?

Grow some seedlings in single end of a glass dish or pan. When they are about 5 cm tall start watering them on one side only and a little distance away from the nearest plants. Continue the watering daily for about a week and then dig away the soil and see if the watering has had any persuade on the direction of growth of the roots
