Explain the Heart Rate Monitoring (HRM) Method?
HRM is a method to measure the daily energy expenditure of free-living individuals, based on the relationship of heart rate and oxygen consumption and on minute-by- minute monitoring of heart rate. Extrapolating from heart rate to energy expenditure is a method which has been widely believed to be valuable and reasonably valid. The technique is fairly practicable, there are several instruments on the market which are not very expensive, and it is probably the method of choice in some population groups, such as young children, old people, and ill people. This is not the place to give a detailed critique of the methodology, other than to say that it must be used with circumspection and an awareness of the variable relationships of heart rate and energy expenditure.
