Although the use of exchange lists is still popular for planning diabetic diets, it has been realized in recent years that in exchange lists though different foods contain the same amount of nutrients, the rise in blood sugar after the meal (post-prandial) varies and is not the same. This has given rise to a new concept that different carbohydrates raise the blood sugar to a variable extent. To diabetic diets, it is important to know that how much the blood sugar would raise using different foods or combination of foods. Therefore, the glycemic index concept was born.
