Establishing standards of performance:

Appraisal system require performance standards which serve as bench marks against which performance is measured. The standard set for performance must be clearly defined and ambiguous. They should be attainable by a normal employee. To be useful standard should relate to the desired result to each job. Performance standard must be clear to both the appraiser and appraise. The performance standard or goals must be developed the supervisors to ensure that all the relevant have been factors included. Where the output can be measured the personnel characteristics which contribute to employee performance must determined.
