Define hexose monophosphate pathway
The hexose monophosphate pathway (HMP also called the pentose phosphate pathway, or phoshogluconate pathway) consists of Mo irreversible oxidative reactions, followed by a series of reversible sugar phosphate interconversions. This is an alternate oxidative pathway for the metabolism of glucose in the liver, lactating mammary gland and adipose tissue in addition to Embden-Meyerhof pathway for glycolysis.
