In your introduction be sure to introduce both of the films to provide context for whatever you decide your thesis will be. Remember that films are considered longer works and as such should be in italics or underlined.

A major component of the essay that you will need to focus on is coming up with your thesis statement. You will need an argument that you can support with evidence from both film sources. You will need developed paragraphs that include support from both of the the films with topic sentences that support your argument expressed in your thesis statement. Be sure to bring in ample support in the form of dialogue, descriptions of scenes or quotations.

Second, be sure that you have followed an organizational pattern that brings out both films in each paragraph. You will want to describe in detail scenes from Mudbound that support your topic sentences (and that the topic sentences support your thesis statement). Then you need to relate issues from 13th to support the detailed support from Mudbound. Do this for each body paragraph in your essay. You will need to develop two or three body paragraphs in this way. Review the handout on compare and contrast essays before you start. (You can see from this paragraph that films are considered longer works for MLA purposes of punctuation. In other words, film titles should be italicized or underlined.)
