Title
- Ensure you have an appropriate title
Introduction Paragraph
- Should be no longer than 5-6 sentences
- Last sentence is your position statement (thesis)
Position Statement (Thesis)
- Must include a strong position/thesis statement with 3 sub-points written in parallel structure
- Must be the last sentence of your introduction
Body Paragraphs (3)
- Each body paragraph focuses on your 3 sub-points in the same order they are presented in your position/thesis statement
- Each body paragraph should be 8-10 sentences
- Topic sentences must reflect your main point
- Topic sentences must be written in the best organizational pattern to get your main point across
- Use logical, convincing support, details, and evidence to support your point
- Consider the opposition and put in counter arguments
- Refrain from repetition, fallacies, generalizations
- Must be unified, coherent, and well developed
Conclusion Paragraph
- Restate your position and make a call to action for your reader if appropriate
- Do not include any new ideas
- Should be 4-5 sentences
Writing Style & Grammar
- Use effective, concise word choices. For example, do not use the word "thing"
- Speak with authority when defending your position
- Use only 1st or 3rd person pronouns (no 2nd person pronouns)
- Do not use any contractions
- Proofread for accurate sentence structure, spelling, punctuation, subject/verb agreement, pronoun agreement, and subjective words (these need to be eliminated)
- Use 12 pt font, indent 1st sentence of each new paragraph, use 1" margins and left justify
- Double space
