In an essay of 1200 - 1500 words, analyze one of the staves in Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, considering how one of the major themes listed below is reflected in the individual stage you've chosen, and further, how your chosen stave works to develop your theme in the novel as a whole. The themes available for consideration are listed below:
- Bondage
- Physical vs. ghostly bodies
- Relationship between sympathy and social justice
- Public vs. private space
- Redemption
- Food
You may also consider the role of Dickens' text in either one of the following specific historical contexts:
- Revitalization and creation of Christmas traditions.
- Plight of poor children in London.

Your paper must demonstrate a clear thesis, unified paragraphs, and topic sentences that both describe and direct the paragraphs they head. You must make use of at least two secondary sources.
