APPLICATION LETTER ASSIGNMENT

You need to write an application letter for the scholarship or internship with proper formatting. The format is the most important. Everything you need to do is properly discussed in the attached files. I have attached two files of which one is about the criteria and guidelines to write and other is about the formatting. It is one page but you need to work a little bit hard. The application letter should be five paragraphs as discussed in the files.

MAIN TASK

Write about how and why you are an excellent "match" for a particular scholarship/internship. Imagine it is the end of the semester and you have just found an engineering-related scholarship/internship opportunity for which you are going to apply. (Links to scholarships and internship information are provided later in this document. Each scholarship/internship application sets forth educational requirements and desired attributes of the recipient.)

One of the requirements of the application is a 450-475 word application letter to the individual, organization, or committee who will select the scholarship/internship recipient. Write a clear, detailed letter that is specific to the particular scholarship/internship for which you are applying. The letter must include concrete details of activities and accomplishments from your relevant experience and education, including the first year at UT Arlington.

Overall, your effective letter must do the following:

• Establish and maintain maximum structural integrity.

o The how/why that demonstrates how you are an excellent candidate for this scholarship will constitute the main structural supports of the letter.

o You must explicitly state, throughout the letter, how/why you match the criteria for this scholarship/internship; if you do not detail this "match" throughout the letter, the letter will be structurally weak-nothing will stand firmly, your claims and authority will fall apart.

Overall, your effective letter must do the following:

• Have many "concrete" details.

• Provide your readers with evidence in the form of concrete details or "word pictures" that illustrate and reinforce claims and evaluations; if claims and evaluations are not immediately reinforced via concrete details/descriptions, those claims and evaluations rest on fallacies or very shaky ground, and readers will not be able to believe what you are saying.

• "Show your work"- this means evidence detailing how you arrived at the claims and evaluations; in your letter, you must show, via concrete details and explicit explanation, how and why you have arrived at the claim/conclusion that will be an excellent choice to be a recipient of this scholarship.

ESSENTIAL PARTS/COMPONENTS OF THE LETTER

INTRODUCTION

The INTRODUCTION to an effective application letter must

• Note the purpose of this letter.
• Provide an initial clarification of the specific connection between your qualifications and this scholarship/internship.

BODY (Three paragraphs)

The "BODY" of your effective application letter must

• Provide concrete specifics about your relevant recent activities and achievements.

o "I did very well in my engineering class" does NOT demonstrate how or why you are the best person for this scholarship.

The "BODY" of your effective letter must

• Provide concrete/useful numbers (for example, test scores, first year GPA, numerical class ranking, etc.).

• Provide concretely detailed depictions of you "in action"

o For example, if you claim, "I demonstrated excellent leadership skills in my class," you must describe exactly how you demonstrated "leadership": what were your actions in what particular classroom situations; what were the results of those actions? If the letter claims that you are a strong, effective team member, then you must show (via concrete details and clear explanations) how you worked successfully as part of a particular team project.

The "BODY" of an effective application letter will

• Demonstrate your familiarity with the scholarship criteria by specifically stating particular scholarship criteria throughout the letter (see the links below for the kinds of criteria scholarships often have).

• Describe exactly why this scholarship's criteria match with your relevant, specific experiences/achievements.

o Readers must see, clearly and specifically, how and why your particular qualifications meet with the particular criteria detailed by the scholarship.

o ""I would be an excellent recipient for this scholarship" does NOT demonstrate how or why you are a good candidate/match for this scholarship.

• Include useful explanations of the match between you and this scholarship such as the following: "The Y Scholarship honors students who demonstrate determination and creativity in problem solving. I have often shown good problem solving skills in class, regularly experimenting with better code writing procedures and testing out interesting possible work-arounds for both hardware and software issues One particularly notable example of my determination to observe carefully and problem-solve accordingly occurred while I was working with a team to build a Lego Mindstorm robot for a technology fair. Prior to the fair, our team's robot was not performing reliably. While my teammates insisted the problem was with the code, I careful observe how and when the robot stopped working, and this led me to disassemble the sensor motor. I found a small defect, and proceeded to devise a fix by reconfiguring a paperclip to reinforce the defective part. The robot then worked consistently throughout the technology fair demonstrations. I believe that my assessments and solutions in this and other situations strongly suggest that I have the ability to address various kinds of problem solving with determination and creativity."

o The letter writer uses evidence in the form of the example of the Lego Mindstorm robot malfunction to show himself/herself "in action" as a determined problem solver.

CONCLUSION

The CONCLUSION to your effective letter must

• Avoid bland, general, ineffective clichés.

• Reinforce the strong "match" between yourself and this scholarship.

o "I hope you can see that I am a good candidate" is NOT a useful statement in a conclusion.

o The letter-writer should not be "hoping"; you should show how and why you meet the particular criteria for this particular scholarship; the conclusion must reinforce the evidence and further fortify your scholarship match.
