POST 1

The story I chose to write about was "The Diamond Necklace" by Guy de Maupassant. I believe the core conflict of this story was Mathilde's internal struggle of trying to be someone she is not. At first I thought it was a conflict of lying because this Mathilde could have resolved this if she had told the truth about losing the necklace. After thinking more, I realized that if Mathilde did not pretend to be rich and have too much pride to tell Madame Forestier that she lost her necklace then this whole thing would have never happened.

The theme in this story is a "Pride and Downfall" type theme. The story is based around Mathilde's desire to be rich and while trying to act the part she ends up loosing an expensive necklace. If Mathilde had come clean about the necklace and told her friend that she did not have the money to buy her a new one, then she would have found out it was a fake. That could have prevented the downfall.

Some of the literary elements used in this story are imagery, rising action and situational irony. When Maupassant describes Mathilde's day dreams of being rich he provides great detail of what she is imagining in her head. The rising action starts the moment Mathilde realizes she lost her friends necklace. The detail is good to the point I can imagine I am running around looking for the necklace my wife lost. The situational irony is at the end when you find out the necklace lost was only worth 500 francs and the one Mathilde replaced it with cost thirty six thousand francs.

Are there other conflicts that your classmate should consider? For example, if your classmate primarily discussed a character's external conflicts, offer an internal conflict that the character faces, or vice versa.

Does your classmate adequately connect the character with the setting? Are there details that he or she did not discuss but are important to the story? Why are these details important? Explain to your classmate.

POST 2II

In the story Alice Walker's, the The Welcome Table the old woman and the literacy text for that was the imagery describing the woman stating that she was an old woman. There is also another imagery part when it was describing the theme of the story. They stated that the old woman wore high heels with polished toes. She also wore a long rusty old dress. That was where the imagery came in. The whole story was about imagery it also talked about her blue eyes. The woman had interested me because it was like I can picture of in my mind. It was like I seen the woman before. The choices that she made was to me flashback when it stated that she had fear. The conflict of the story was when it was describing the ancient door. It could go both internal and external conflict. She handled it by telling her story over coming her fear. The setting contributes to the character because it is telling her story of her fear. The setting to the character experience give the story a meaning by the way the story is described. I have incorporated illustrates the meaning of the story.

POST 3

I chose to write about Lt Jimmy Cross in "The Things They Carried". I chose Lt Cross because like him I am in the military and I can relate to his story more than others. The choices Lt Cross chooses to make during this story are thinking about a girl back home rather that his mission and troops. The theme throughout this story is how the troops know exactly how much each piece of equipment they carry but the extra baggage in people's mind is what is really holding them down. Lt Cross had an internal conflict of whether to pay attention to his mission or think about Martha. He seems to have a lot of extra baggage on his mind in the form of a girl. Lt Cross day dreaming about Martha prevents him from keeping his men alive until he has an epiphany at the end of the story and gets rid of the extra baggage.

The setting of this story was what made this story interesting to me because at war in a jungle far away from home. The way the writer describes the area around them, makes you think that they could be killed at any moment. If the setting of this story did not take place in a war zone, I don't think we would reading about it now.
