Assignment Overview
Reflection is a way of observing your behaviour and interactions. When reflecting, it is important to be open and honest as this will help you to make stronger connections between your feelings, thoughts and behaviours. Reflective writing aims to get you to think about and understand your learning experiences; how you are progressing and changing.
For written reflection papers, the focus should be on what was taught, learned, experienced. An excellent written reflection assignment would consist of thoughtful and reflective statements and demonstrates an analytical ability to go beneath the surface and make logical connections to what was learned personally and professionally. In addition, it requires excellent written communication skills where ideas are clearly organized, easy to follow and understand andare supported with examples and rationale.
This assignment requires that you write a reflection integrating both the DIEP structure and SMART goal-setting concepts and complete the attached ‘Personal and Professional Action Plan'. Before starting this assignment, review the following PowerPoint presentations, attached resourcesand the assignment rubric.
- Personal and Profession Development

DIEP Structure
Paragraph #1:Describe
What happened? What did I do, read, see, and hear?
Look back at something or a period of time (often an event/series of events, i.e. something that happened, but it could also be an idea or object).
Paragraph #2: Interpret
Explain your learning, how does it connect with prior knowledge, your feelings? Why did I do this? What might this mean?
Analyze the event or idea (thinking in depth and from different perspectives, using any theories you have learnt, and trying to explain, often with reference to a model or theory from your subject). Examine your assumptions, beliefs, values and attitudes.
Paragraph #3: Evaluate
What value did it bring? How was it useful to my learning...to my goals? Did I grow? Did I learn or practice a transferrable skill? What was my opinion about this experience/action/or inaction? Did I justify things I shouldn't? Do I now have a plan to develop the capability to solve these problems? Connect your judgments to your observations. How have you changed (or need to change) as a result?
Think carefully about what the event or idea means for you and your ongoing progress as a learner and/or practicing professional.
Paragraph #4: Plan
How can I use this experience/learning in the future? In my next program, in my career, life in general?
Begin to think about next steps: goals (short and long term), and an action plan to achieve them. Things we will need to start doing, stop doing, continue doing in order to become successful.
Personal and Professional Action Plan
Personal Vision Statement: What I want to be in the future
Personal Mission Statement:What I want to do now
Goals:What I want to achieve? (SMART goals only with timelines).
Strategy: How I will achieve my goals (Step by step plan outline, explains skills needed, why each step is taken, possible obstacles and when each step will occur)?
Required Resources: Who (minimum of two people) or what help will be needed for effective execution of my goals?
