Imagine you have been hired to work as a bus driver and it is your first day of training. The instructor announces that you will learn how to drive a bus by sitting through four weeks of lectures (in a classroom) listening to presentations. At the conclusion of this training, would you find this an effective way to make you to be a bus driver? Would you enjoy learning this way? Would you feel confident enough to drive a bus? Your answers to these questions are probably going to be no! As training and development professionals, it is our job to decide which are the best methods to deliver the training based on the training objectives, performance goals, learners, and training content.
A Manager's Perspective:
You are the training and development manager for a public transportation company in a small town in British Columbia, and presently your new bus drivers are learning how to drive the town's buses by sitting through four weeks of classroom lectures. So far, the feedback for this training program has been dismal, and you realize that this is not the optimal way to train your new bus drivers and would like to incorporate technology into this training program. Based on the learning material from this module and your own research, please prepare a proposal for your boss outlining the advantages and disadvantages of incorporating technology into this training program, as well as any challenges that may be encountered with the delivery of technology-based training.
