Problem: The Odyssey

The epic is obviously a glorification of men from the ancient world, so it's a little tricky to judge characters from a modern perspective. Still, how could it be argued that the grand story beginning with Helen of Troy and ending with Odysseus' reassertion of his rights as king of Ithaka would sort of fall apart if women had the same rights as men in the story? How, in some ways, is the epic dependent upon inequality (in terms of gender equality for this discussion but in terms of class equality in another discussion)? Why is this the kind of question we might ask in the modern academic setting?
