Topic: The young student from "Theme for English B" was the other subject I decided to write about. This young man demonstrated his moral character by being able to overcome the obstacles in his path during a period when few African Americans were able to pursue higher education. He did not allow his skin tone prevent him from pursuing an education. He talks about a lot of things that everyone likes and enjoys, like holidays, cuisine, and school. "I think being a person of color doesn't mean I don't like the same things that people of other races prefer" (Hughes, 1949 Pg. 1077). He was resilient and proud that, despite his race, he was an American just like everyone else. He made a convincing case that the only distinction between him and a person who was white was the color of his skin, that he could still learn and be educated, and that he could do all the same things that a white American could do and succeed at them, despite the fact that at the time, the majority of people of color were discriminated against out of pure ignorance. He did not tolerate racism since he was genuine to himself, wanted to look like no one else, and embraced others for who they were.
