Now that you have finished The Glass Menagerie, think deeply about Tom Wingfield. He leaves his family in search of adventure, freedom and happiness at the end of the play. However, in his final narration, Tom does not appear to be happy at all. In fact, he sounds quite miserable. We were led to believe that being at home was causing his unhappiness. But he leaves his home and he is still unhappy. Why do you think Tom is still unhappy? What else could be happening with him?
