1. Why are there so many variations? Remember that formalized ASL instruction did not happen in schools until the 1900s. Up until that point, there was nothing that "connected" Deaf people together. Even today, not everyone knows that ASL exists and that it is a real language. Many hearing parents with Deaf children still pursue some form of English for their children because they will be in the Hearing world. The knowledge of English has an impact on their signing.

2. Are they all real languages? No. ASL and English are the only two real languages, linguistically speaking?

3. What do I do if someone is using one of the other systems? Nothing. Many "signers" are well-versed in a variety of these and can easily code-switch between the different variations. Others will just "correct" you (with no intention of being rude to you). My rule of thumb is that you always follow along with your signer. I defer to the Deaf each and every time. Most importantly, never tell a Deaf person they are using "SEE2" and not ASL. They may not even be aware that there is a difference. Who are we to point it out to them?
