Question: In India, there is a significant population of tribal people, making up 8.6% of the total population. Most of these tribal people, about 89.97%, live in rural areas. India has the highest number of tribal populations in the world, with different ethnic groups coexisting in the same territory, each having its own unique traditional culture. These tribal communities mainly reside in rural and remote areas and are among the most vulnerable and marginalized groups in society.
One of the tribal groups in India is the Khasi, who are primarily found in the northeastern part of the country. They live in various states such as Meghalaya, Assam, and Manipur, but the majority of the Khasi population resides in the forests of Meghalaya.
However, due to migration and increased exposure to modernization and globalization, the Khasi people have experienced a loss of their moral values, and ecological culture. The traditional ways of living in harmony with nature and the environment, known as "ecological culture," have been diminished. The ecological culture emphasizes the ethical and moral responsibility of society and individuals to follow environmental principles for the benefit of all.
Large global companies that dominate their industries, known as oligopolies, can have a substantial economic influence on local economies, including situations like the one described earlier. These global players have often gained advantages from the decline of local competition. When local businesses, including those supporting regional languages like Khasi, find it challenging to compete and stay afloat in the face of global competition, economic reliance on these international players can result in economic reliance. Additionally, unethical practices and unsustainable tourism development can harm the environment, disregarding the principles of ecological culture.
