Professions developed ethical standards and codes for a number of reasons. First, ethical standards helped to reassure the public, particularly law-makers, that the field could regulate itself and did not need others outside of the profession making laws governing the practice of that profession in order to protect the public's interests. Ethical standards offered the public reassurance in general that a profession was standardized and that they could expect to be treated ethically according to set criteria. This improved people's perception of and trust in the profession and consequently increased business. To put it simply, ethical standards increased the professionalism of the profession.
