• Are all of your facts and evidence up-to-date and clearly referenced?
Completeness:
• Have you included enough main ideas and development to explain your subject and convince your reader? (Remember that enough means from the reader's point of view, not the writer's.)
Subject:
Is your subject
• Significant? Does it avoid the trivial and the obvious?
• Single? Does it avoid double and combined subjects?
• Specific? Is it focused and precise?
• Supportable? Have you provided enough evidence to make your meaning clear?
Main Points:
Are your main points
• Significant? Have you deleted any unimportant ones?
• Distinct? Are they all different from one another, or is there an overlap in content?
• Relevant? Do all the points relate directly to your subject?
• Arranged in the most appropriate order? (Again, appropriate means from the reader's perspective. Choose chronological, climactic, logical, or random order. However, it must be the order that will help the reader make sense of your information)
Paragraphs:
Does each paragraph
• Begin with a clear, identifiable topic sentence?
• Develop one - and only one - main idea?
• Use one or more kinds of development appropriate to the main idea? (think of "rhetorical strategies")
• Contain clear and effective transitions to signal the relationship between sentences? Between paragraphs?
Usage:
• Have you used words to convey meaning rather than to impress?
• Have you eliminated any pretentious language, slang, or offensive language?
• Have you cut out any unnecessary words?
• Have you corrected any abuses of language? (Remember, an article or book is not "a good read." Read is not a noun. Read is a verb: "It is a good article." ; You are not "adulting," you are "being an adult.")
Tone:
• Is your tone consistent, reasonable, courteous, and confident throughout your essay?
• Does your tone match what your audience expects and will look for?
Introduction:
Does your introduction
• Catch the reader's attention and make him or her want to read on?
• Contain a clearly identifiable thesis statement?
• Identify the main points that your paper will explain/examine?
Conclusion:
Does your conclusion
• Contain a summary or reinforcement of your main points, rephrased to avoid word-for-word repetition?
• Contain a statement that effectively finalizes your argument and leaves the reader with something to think about?
Editing:
Formatting:
• Is your essay formatted according to APA Guidelines? General document formatting? In text citations? Reference Page? Annotated Bibliography?
Grammar and Style:
• Have you corrected grammar mistakes? Ensured your essay is free of contractions and colloquialisms?
• Are you sure you have spelled all words correctly? Does each word mean exactly what it should mean?
