For this assignment, you'll be asked to read two scenarios. For each, you'll be asked to provide arguments both for and against each scenario and decide on what you might do in each scenario.
Case Scenario 1: On a dating website, do you lie about your age?
You have been single for a long time. You have tried multiple ways to meet people and have finally decided to try online dating. You are 45, and you notice that all the good potential romantic partners want someone younger. You know that they have a lot to offer, and that if they just look past your age on paper, they will see that you make a great dating partner. You ask yourself if your profile should say you're younger, and whether you should post an older photo so that your current age isn't as obvious.
Here are examples of for and against arguments. Feel free to elaborate on these for the first scenario or provide a new rationale. For the second scenario you can generate your arguments from scratch.
An argument for lying about your age: Once people see past a simple number, they'll see that you are a real catch. Besides, if you keep getting dismissed because of your age, then another person might miss out on a great relationship with you. It's what's inside that matters.
An argument against lying: Starting off a relationship with a lie is not a good way to start. There may be good reasons why people have age restrictions for dating online. Maybe they are worried that a partner who is older might not live as long or may have different life expectations or interests. Even if they agree to go on a date, once they see you, they'll know that you were dishonest.
For each question, be sure to provide a clear rationale and explanation to justify your response(s).
1. First, provide a well-articulated and supported argument for each side.
An argument for lying:
An argument for being honest:
2. Next, answer each question below.
What would you do? Do you lie or be honest and hope you meet someone eventually? Justify your response.
What would you do if it were another characteristic such as height or weight? Justify your response.
Case Scenario 2: Terminate an employee with a heart condition?
You're a supervisor at a non-profit business in the engineering industry that focuses on agricultural sustainability in rural communities. Your employee has been managing a key account for 2 years now. A year ago, their performance suffered because they underwent treatment for a rare heart condition. For a few months their performance got better, but over the past few months they have made a few mistakes and the investors are not happy. They have threatened to pull their funds, putting the communities at risk. The employee explains that they are in the middle of a six-month round of new treatment, but, so far, their prognosis is not good. They acknowledge that they have dropped the ball at work, and have mentioned that if you terminate them, they won't take legal action. They need to keep working, however, because they are the sole bread winner and the only source of income for their family. Do you keep them on or fire them?
For each question, be sure to provide a clear rationale and explanation to justify your response(s).
1. First, provide a well-articulated and supported argument for each side.
An argument for keeping them:
An argument for firing them:
2. Next, answer each question below.
What would you do if you were the supervisor? Would you keep them on, or fire them? Why, or why not?
What would your decision be if they were not ill? Why, or why not?
What would your decision be if they had lots of money? Why, or why not?
