Part A)
Now that you have some experience writing about other cultures and reading academic work in Anthropology. Find a second article on the people that you choose for the first. It could be the same people or the same theme or topic. Make sure it is ethnographic, or cultural anthropology, material not archaeological or linguistic.
Again, I would like you to find an article from a journal database, like JSTOR. You will be held responsible for reading the article, provide a summary of its body, and draw out the conclusion of the Anthropologist. Here is a link to library databases held at HCC.
Anthropologists in North America follow certain guidelines when writing. You will be responsible for citing the author when you paraphrase his or her work.
You will also be responsible for citing the article at the very end of the summary in references cited section.
The summary will be double-spaced, Times New Roman, Font size 12. It must be a minimum of two pages not including the "references cited" section.
The main purpose of the paper is to deliver a summary of the research article you choose to review. Here are some general questions that can help you identify key elements you might want to discuss in your short summary:
+Who is the object of the study of the paper?
+What types of methods did they use to conduct the study? Quantitative (surveys) or Qualitative (interviews) methods? Documentary sources?
+Does the author demonstrates the ability to establish rapport with his or her research subjects if doing qualitative or quantitative research.
+Where was the research done?
+What reason do the authors state that they decided to carry out the research? Was it prior research that caused an interest in the research? Are they trying to investigate a long-standing question in the field? Or is it more about solving a public concern?
+Did they mention any previous research to contextualize that research?
+What do the researchers primarily discuss in the paper?
+What was the general topic in Anthropology, was the research economic, political, about race/ethnicity?
+What are their conclusions with regard to the reason for the study?
Part B)
In this last writing assignment, I would like you to examine the two previous articles that you wrote about in this class and develop a little analysis leading towards a research question. How might the different facets that you learned about a particular culture or topic talk to some of the themes that we spoke about in class? Contextualize your research within one of the topics, of your choice, that we have talked about "Medical Anthro., Religion, Political Anthro, Economic Anthro." Think about your research within the concepts that these chapters present to you.
For example, if I had decided to study Italians, I may have learned that Italy is today a predominantly urban secular country. I may decide to contextualize and formulate a question with this information based on concepts created by Karl Marx in his study of religion. Particularly his discussion about how secularization has led to the development of a critically conscious society of religion thereby challenging the legitimizing effects of religion in terms of social and economic inequality that guarantee a better afterlife.
When writing the one-page contextualization make sure to cite your textbook and articles where relevant. Use the AAA guidelines when citing authors.
