1. Yeats's poem "The Second Coming" (1072-1073) powerfully conveys a sense of disintegration, even perhaps apocalypse. How does Yeats does this? In your answer, discuss specific poetic devices such as images, metaphors, and word choices.
2. Owen's "Dulce Et Decorum Est" (939) and Komunyakaa's "Facing It" (1201-1202) each depict a soldier's memories of and reflections on the experience of war. What similarities and differences do you see in the poems? For example, the language and tone of the poems are very different.
3. Blanco's "My Father in English" (892-893) and Mora's "Elena" (1082) both deal with language differences across generations. How are these poems similar or contrasting? 4. Reread Hughes's short poems "I, Too" (1099) and "Harlem" (1099). Note the 19-year gap between the poems. How does the mood or tone of these poems contrast?
