Topic: Do Popular, often violent, video games provide more benefit or more harm to young gamers
Times New Roman font, size 11.5, double spaced, standard margins.
All in-text and end-of-text citations must be in APA format.
The Assignment has four parts:
1. Title Page
2. Introduction.
3. Body Paragraph #1
4. Works Cited Page.
TITLE PAGE:
Your title page must include the following:
An Original Title; Name; Date of submission; Student number;
INTRODUCTION:
We've discussed introductions in class, however this will be where the majority of your work/research will appear. Do not worry if your introduction is a full page long.
There are three parts to your intro:
1. Context
Your introduction is generally designed to bring context and foundational information to the reader about your topic. This will require a large amount of descriptive, rather than prescriptive, writing. Your introduction will begin with a brief overview of all relevant topic background information, we call this 'context' or overview.
Consider what elements of your essay require foundational research to understand. Are there terms or concepts that need explaining before moving forward? Are there laws or theories which stand out? Are there historical events which have shaped your topic?
When in doubt, consider the classic: Who, What, When, Where, Why and How.
How you choose to present the context portion is up to you, but remember, this part of your paper is purely Descriptive, meaning it outlines facts without bias. You'll have plenty of time to argue later on, for now, try to keep this part as factual as possible. Remember, you're trying to inform the reader here, not convince them (yet).
2. Thesis:
Carefully consider your thesis. It is the central claim that your entire essay is attempting to prove.
It should be a single sentence in length and be a clear, prescriptive claim. A prescriptive claim is something that argues how something should be, rather than how some thing is.
Your thesis provides the reader with the main idea which will permeate through every other point you make. Remember, every argument in your body paragraphs should help prove your thesis.
Your thesis is likely to grow and change throughout your final essay writing. This is perfectly fine and, in fact, advisable.
3. Map.
Your map is a simple, clear, outlining of your three main arguments which will define each of your three body paragraphs.
For this particular assignment, you will only have to provide one body paragraph,BUT you will have to outline here your full three (3) upcoming arguments. These will be discussed during the 1 on 1 sessions.
If you are having trouble arranging these into a clear single sentence, you may break these up into smaller sentences, however, make sure it is clear that these are three arguments which you will argue going forward.
BODY PARAGRAPH.
You will only include one (1) body paragraph for this assignment. Choose your strongest of your three arguments.
When choosing arguments, think of it like a debate. Your debate 'side' is your thesis. What are three arguments you could construct to prove your point? How will you prove these issues within a broader context? What research is required to strengthen these points?
For this portion, barring some specific arguments, you will be able to follow the argument model of :
Topic Sentence; What is the Problem?; Prove the Problem exists. Why is this problem important? What is the Solution? Prove the solution solves the problem described. Why does this matter (So What?)?
Be aware, taking your arguments directly from a website is a good way to fail this whole assignment, and plagiarism is a great way to get expelled from GBC. Use your brains. If you are having trouble coming up with arguments, feel free to see me and we can discuss some options that suit your particular viewpoint. My office door is open, just come in.
WORKS CITED/BIBLIOGRAPHY PAGE
Your works cited is an alphabetically organized list of full end of text APA citations for each and every source you have used throughout your essay. You want to have at least 6 or so sources listed here, as a good portion of your research will appear in your introduction. For your final essay draft, you'll likely want far more.
Topic 6: Do Popular, often violent, video games provide more benefit or more harm to young gamers?
Video games are a complex, growing medium, covering hundreds of genres, styles and types. A multi-billion dollar industry, very few would claim that *ALL* video games are violent. That said, there are many who argue that video games, particularly those featuring violence, nudity or explicit subject matter, should be banned or even censored.
In weighing the pros and cons of video games, we must also weight the benefits or harms that video games present to players, particularly young gamers - as they are arguably more vulnerable.
Your challenge is to weigh the many benefits and harms of video games, and determine what, if anything, should be done to improve these effects.
Keep in mind bias, extreme examples and false binaries in this complex and subtle issue.
