We have become so dependent on social media for marketing that I cannot imagine what it was like before. Having product descriptions and services at our disposal has spoiled us. We can quickly read reviews and product descriptions without setting foot in a store. If you are interested in a particular service, you can investigate other people's experiences before trying it yourself. There are pros and cons to social media. It is keeping people from interacting face-to-face and learning social skills. Cyber-attack risk has also increased as hackers are becoming smarter at stealing personal information. On the other hand, social media has connected people who once could not get in touch. There are virtual communities for people to interact with that they might not have before. It is a great way to share ideas, connect at work, and keep each other updated quickly. I have connected with family across the U.S. that I might not have otherwise.
Social media has become the new way of life for marketing. I love to read travel reviews. Years ago, I encountered some bad experiences from using a travel agent and not being able to read reviews online about the resort I was traveling to with the kids. I even had to switch resorts once and have yet to receive a refund from the first. You can sometimes join a resort group on Facebook and see updates almost daily on what things are like there. You can also meet people that are going to the same time as you and learn about excursions they recommend from traveling there before. You still have to be careful about misleading posts on Facebook. We traveled to a resort a couple of years ago that looked amazing online, and then when we got there, it looked nothing like the pictures we saw.
Moorman and McCarthy (2021) recognize that social media marketing has taken center stage since the pandemic. To make social media messaging effective, it is essential to ensure that your social media strategy aligns with your overall marketing strategy (Moorman & McCarthy, 2021). If it doesn't, you can face budgeting problems and decreased revenue. Incorporating influencers to relay your message is another way to increase online traffic (Moorman & McCarthy, 2021). Just be careful. As we learned in earlier weeks, the wrong influencers can be detrimental to your reputation.
