Part A - Annotated Bibliography:
In this assessment, you will compile an Introduction and annotated bibliography for the IT research problem that you have identified in the client's business. An annotated bibliography is a document you prepare to study and analyse relevant papers. It helps you to identify the research challenges and sub-questions you will address in the future assessments.
Part B - The 3-Minute Pitch:
You will be required to present the following items in the presentation in the form of a pitch: identified problem in the case study, justification for choosing the problem, one challenge faced in completing the task, one strategy used in overcoming the challenge in week 5 during an in-class presentation. You will be given 3 minutes to pitch your case but only one slide can be used for the presentation.
Assessment Description
In this assessment, you will create an annotated bibliography in the form of a table. Your task is to identify the causes of a problem identified from your chosen case study. You will find and evaluate relevant sources that discuss the issue, providing a summary and analysis of each source. The focus will be on clearly presenting the causes of the problem, supported by relevant research and evidence. The annotated bibliography should be organized and concise, offering insights into the underlying factors contributing to the client's IT challenge.
Learning outcome 1: Design a plan for research that aims to identify the causes and potential solutions of an IT problem for a client.
Assessment Instructions
Students must conduct research externally and include references to produce a well referenced assessment. You should use at least 15 sources of information and reference these in accordance with any acceptable referencing style. These may include websites, social media sites, industry reports, census data, journal articles, and newspaper articles. These references should be presented as in-text citations and a referencing list at the end of your assessment (not included in the word limit). Wikipedia and other ‘popular' sites are not to be used. The assessment is divided into two parts.
Part A:
You must submit your report in Word document or in PDF format.
The report should be well-structured and organised. It should include the following details:
Research Problem Identification:
Provide a precise and detailed description of the complex IT problem you have identified from the case study. The problem may include the technical and operational challenges involved, as well as any underlying issues contributing to the problem.
Offer a brief overview of the client's business, including relevant industry, scale, and technological environment. This will provide the necessary context to understand how the problem affects the organization's operations.
Justify the importance of the problem by highlighting its potential impact on the client's business.
Create an Annotated Reading Log:
Identify and list prominent literature sources in the field.
Find examples of influential papers and explain their impact briefly.
Create a concise, relevant reading log with annotations for foundational articles.
Select 15 articles that are foundational to the IT problem being investigated. Of these, at least five should be highly relevant to the client's IT issue, offering critical insights into the causes, context, and implications of the problem. These articles should directly address the core aspects of the issue. The remaining ten articles should be domain-relevant, providing valuable
background or broader context related to the problem, though they may not focus directly on the client's specific challenge. All selected articles must be peer-reviewed and published in reputable journals or conference proceedings within the last seven years to ensure their relevance and credibility. Additionally, consider articles based on the inputs from your weekly in-class activities and prominent conferences papers. For each article:
Highlight the strengths in writing, structure, or methodology.
Discuss how these articles shape your understanding of the field and guide your research focus.
Summarize the primary contributions and relevance to your proposed research questions.
Part B:
You are required to prepare a presentation which you will deliver in week 5 as an in-person presentation. You are allowed to use only one slide. There should be three components of your presentation:
Introduce your problem and justify why you choose the problem
What was one of your biggest challenges in solving this assessment task
What was your one strategy to address the challenge
The slides of the presentation should be uploaded by week 4 as part of the assessment submission. You are not allowed to use or plug and play your own presentation slides during week 5 in-class presentation. Your facilitator will assist you in displaying the slide for your presentation.
