Chapter: Human Resources Planning and Recruitment

1. The evidence seems to support the idea that when a company needs to replace their leader, an internal recruit is the better choice. Internal recruits last longer in terms of tenure and are ousted far less frequently than external recruits. Visit two different corporate websites. As a suggestion, visit Fortune 500 websites: https://www.zyxware.com/articles/4344/list-of-fortune-500-companies-and-their-websites, then look for evidence of internal or external recruitment policies. Consider looking for trends in terms of industry policies for recruitment and see if they can identify any patterns. For example, are there industries that tend to have more internal recruitment? Does the nature of or type of industry matter?

2. See below exercises:

ARE LABOR UNIONS BECOMING EXTINCT?

This exercise is designed to provide you with the opportunity to make a decision about the usefulness of labor unions. Most people have very strong feelings about labor unions, leading to the current ongoing debate questioning the unions usefulness in the workplaces of the 21st century. The staunch supporters focus on empowerment of employees and the creation of an improved work environment. Those who avidly oppose them focus on the fact that regulatory bodies monitor working conditions, the work environment has been improved, and therefore labor unions have nothing left to accomplish.

Read the following statement and choose a side (either you agree with the statement, which is the pro side, or you disagree with the statement, which is the con side of the argument).

Resolved: Labor unions have no place in the U.S. workplaces of the 21st century.

Once you have chosen a side, research the issue to find facts to support your belief. Prepare a one page executive summary and a cover letter addressed to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) detailing three to five arguments in support of your belief (either pro or con). The executive summary should be persuasive in nature, as to convince the NLRB that unions are either useful or not useful in the 21st century.

Chapter : Selection and Placement.

A. 1. How does greater representation of women on corporate boards promote both societal goals and competitiveness goals at the same time?

2. What long-term steps can be taken by countries and companies to eliminate the need for quotas over time?

B. Exercising Strategy: Who is Screening the Screeners?

1. What alternative selection procedures discussed in this chapter could an employer use to screen potential "bad actors" that would not involve outsourced background checks?

2. If one is committed to obtaining outsourced background checks, what evidence might one want to collect that would allow an assessment of the value of the information in terms of the criteria (reliability, validity, and so on) covered in this chapter?

3 In today's digitally networked world, in what ways is it easier for HR managers or line managers to do their own homework on applicants that would obviate the need for outsourced background checks?

All the responses must be included in one word document.

This assignment must be sent through the turnitin link shown below. Please, check carefully the originality of your submission. If you use external sources to support your rationale, cite them in both within the text and in the references section. The word document must be: double-spaced/12-font/with margins, and references (if apply) . The instructor will not accept more than 5% of materials from external sources in the content of the document; otherwise, your work will be considered invalid.
