Question
Jennifer Walker is a 20-year-old female college student majoring in business. She lives with her boyfriend, Sam age 21, in an off-campus apartment. Jennifer and Sam enjoy walking around the campus with their dog Shelby, and playing tennis and golf. Sam's parents are both doctors and Jennifer's mother is a nurse.
At her examination several months ago, Jennifer obtained a prescription for oral contraceptives. Jennifer has been taking them daily. Recently, she began to notice pain in her left leg when she walks. She ignored it for several days thinking she just pulled a muscle while playing tennis but the pain got worse.
Today she is unable to put any pressure on the leg. She also notes a red area on the calf of her leg that is hot to touch and very tender. She calls the campus clinic and makes an appointment to be seen today.
1. What factors in Jennifer's History puts her at risk for developing a DVT?
2. What is your priority nursing concept problem for Jennifer?
3. What treatment do you anticipate being provided to Jennifer?
4. What teaching will you provide Jennifer during her visit to the campus clinic?
