In writing Typee, Melville used the words savage, islander, native, or a similar word to describe the Typee villagers. But in Revising his manuscript, he would change these words, either savage to native or islander OR the other way around. Your assignment is to look at these and other revisions to determine the "rhetorical strategy" behind Melville's revision. Look especially at chapter 12. In this chapter they fear that they are going to eat the "baked baby". What is Melville's Rhetorical Strategy in this episode? How does his strategy change in his revised edition?
