A 19-year-old female told the doctor during her appointment that she gets tired easily and sleepy during the day unnecessarily. She says she has become dizzy and nearly fainted several times recently. She reports that she has been experiencing very heavy menstrual cycles for the last 3 months.

Temperature 98.8 F, heart rate 110 bpm, respiratory rate 28, blood pressure 110/52 mmHg, pulse Ox 92% on room air

Admission findings: Tongue is red and sore, pale gums and mucus membranes, pale nail beds, no edema, SOB observed during the activity of the physical exam.

history: Menorrhagia, several episodes of near syncope, reported cramping in her legs bilaterally, reports frequent desire to crunch ice chips when consuming liquids.

Laboratory values: / Diagnostic tests: Red blood cell count (RBCs) 3.5 million / mm3, Hemoglobin (Hgb) 8 g / dL, Hematocrit (Hct) 29%, Iron = low, Mean corpuscular volume (MCV) = low, Total iron binding capacity (TIBC) = high, Blood type = A positive

Physician orders: Type & screen for 2 units PBRCs, respiratory therapy referral for evaluation for oxygen therapy, VS every 4 hours.
