According to the article, there are three principles of research and the writing process:

critical reading and writing
active and creative interpretation of sources and data
rhetorical writing
Why creative interpretation?
Of the key principles in academic writing, two in particular stand out because of their focus on writing intent and where new ideas come from:

The purpose of academic writing is to generate and communicate new knowledge and new ideas.
Academic writers write "from sources." This means that new ideas, conclusions, and theories are created on the basis of existing ideas and existing research.
Claim: "[T]he making of new knowledge is a social process, undertaken by intellectual communities."

What happens within such a community to create new knowledge?
What is an example of one social community you are involved in?
How is knowledge exchanged to create new information and ideas within these specific communities? Consider the following quote in responding to the question:
"Change in human understanding of difficult problems and issues takes place over time. By researching those problems and issues and by discussing what they find with others, writers advance their community's understanding and knowledge."

David Bartholomae is quoted as saying that new students have to "invent the university."
